Brookings and IPIHD Look at Diabetes Innovations Around the World
On the surface, health systems in South Texas and the Tamil Nadu state in southern India may not seem to have much in common. The two systems have seemingly opposite problems: Rural India has an acute shortage of physicians, little government funding for health care and very few people covered under insurance. In contrast, McAllen, Texas came under scrutiny in 2009 when medical writer Atul Gawande illustrated how the region’s top-notch doctors and hospitals led the U.S. in health care spending but that it’s largely insured population wasn’t any healthier than other regions.

Opportunities and Challenges for Global Health Impact Investors in India and East Africa
Innovations in Healthcare Deputy Director Sarah Gelfand and Director of Investments at Calvert Foundation Beth Bafford have an article published this week on the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog about their research on the landscape of global health impact investors in India and East Africa. Over the course of six months they reviewed the activities of 85 organizations and interviewed 30 capital providers. Each conversation uncovered the challenges in the sector and also provided perspective on the larger trends that are leading to the increased interest in the private healthcare sector.

Women Advancing Global Health: IiH/SEAD Innovators Highlight
As the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals shifted into the Sustainable Development Goals, one of the driving efforts that remained a priority was the movement for gender equality. After two years of acknowledging the critical role of women and girls in science and technology, the General Assembly gathered on December 22, 2015 and declared February 11th of each year to be International Women and Girls in Science Day.
