Healthcare Innovation in East Africa: Navigating the Ecosystem
Last week the Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator at Duke (SEAD) released a white paper, Healthcare Innovation in East Africa: Navigating the Ecosystem. This report summarizes the wisdom of over sixty stakeholders in East Africa and analyzes the opportunities and gaps in the healthcare innovation ecosystem, spotlighting examples of innovation in the region. It looks at country and regional healthcare trends as well as the conditions for the healthcare entrepreneurial environment. It then examines the mechanisms for supporting and growing innovation and offers suggestions on how diverse stakeholders in the region can work together to navigate connections and chart a course toward improved health outcomes.

The Human Connection: TechCon 2016 Highlight
From November 9th-12th, 2016, researchers, students, entrepreneurs, innovators, field practitioners, and private sector professionals convened at the Higher Education Solutions Network (HESN) conference, TechCon 2016 in Boston, Massachusetts. TechCon showcased innovations emerging from the eight HESN Development Labs and the broader development and higher education communities focused on innovation for social good. These various stakeholders met to energize science and technology solutions for development.

Putting the Community in the Driver’s Seat
In early November, Concern Worldwide and John Snow, Inc. (JSI) hosted Think Differently, a conference focused on evidence-based health innovations for women, newborns, and children. Throughout the day, speakers ranging from intervention designers to international funders shared insights on project challenges and achievements, and one topic rose as the unifying key to success: user-centered design.
